What is FBI Virus?
FBI Virus is a type of a ransomware that is created for the sole purpose of scamming computer users into paying money to the cyber criminals. This ransomware application prompts you with a message on your screen which informs you of your illegal activities. It also states that you should pay a certain amount of money as a fine for the crime that you supposedly committed. Whatever you do don’t pay anything as your money will go straight to the criminals and the access to your computer is highly unlikely to be restored. You need to remove FBI Virus as soon as possible and in order to do that you must use a reliable spyware removal program.
How does FBI Virus work?
The first thing the FBI Virus does is it restricts access to your computer. After that you receive a message that you have been downloading files illegally from the Internet (such as music, movies, tv shows, etc.) and thus must pay a fine. The message also states that after completing the payment which is usually done via MoneyPak the access to your computer will be restored. In some cases the user is even threatened that if he does not pay the fine immediately he will suffer the legal consequences.
Below you will see an example of what these messages may look like. As it was already mentioned none these statements are true and none of the instructions should be followed.
“All activities of this computer has been recorded. All your files are encrypted. Don’t try to unlock your computer!
You have been violating Copyright and Related Rights Law (Video, Music, Software) and illegally using or distributing copyrighted content […].
To unlock the computer, you must pay the fine through MoneyPak of 100$.
Pick up a MoneyPak and purchase it with cash at the register.
Come back and enter your MoneyPak code to unlock your Computer.”
FBI Virus is not the only one of its kind. There are various other versions of this type of ransomware all over the world which include Royal Canadian Mounted Police Virus, New Zealand E-Crime Lab Virus, European Law Enforcement Agency Virus, etc. These programs belong to the Ukash viruses, because this electronic payment system is mentioned in almost all messages prompted by the virus. If your computer was infected by one of these malware programs the first thing you need to do is to regain access to your desktop and then get rid of FBI Virus by using a reliable spyware removal tool.
