What is Crypto?
Crypto is a ransomware program that can lock your computer and encrypt your files. It does not claim to be a government facility like some of the other ransomware applications. The message from Crypto simply states that access to your PC is blocked and your files are encrypted. It goes on to say that if you want to restore the access and get your files back you have to pay the cyber criminals using one of the online money transfer systems.
The last thing you should do is what the instructions tell you. Do not be fooled by the scare tactics employed by the cyber criminals. You can delete Crypto yourself and regain access to your computer system.
How does Crypto work?
Crypto is usually distributed by Trojan:Win32/Crilock.A. You could have infected your PC with the Trojan if you have downloaded a malicious e-mail attachment or clicked on a corrupted link. Other ways of getting infected include entering a hacked website or downloading files or software from unreliable sources.
Since Crypto is distributed by a Trojan horse, your PC has probably been infected before you saw the message from the cyber criminals. The notification that you see on your screen once you get infected with Crypto states that your files have been encrypted and the only way to restore them is by obtaining a private key. The so-called key will cost you 100USD/100EUR which you will have to transfer via Ukash or Moneypak or some other payment system. The message also claims that the key will be destroyed on a specific date and gives a countdown. If you do not pay the cyber criminals before time expires you will not be able to restore your files. Different Crypto versions give different time limits or request different amounts of money. Whichever version you have do not follow the instructions and do not pay the cyber criminals. It will not unlock your system. Crypto does indeed encrypt your files. It can affect your photos, videos, documents, system files and so on. You will most likely have to restore them from back up. The sooner you uninstall Crypto the more chances you have of saving your files.
